Saints lose in london

So near and yet so far for City of Sheffield Saints in their Men's Division 3 semi-final v Eastside Eagles - Saints started slowly, conceding 8 points in three minutes before hitting two 3s, one each from Kingsley and Chris Hackett, and they kept the game close ending the first period 4 behind, 21 - 25. The second quarter belonged to young John Stewart who scored all but two of Saints points, netting 14, and getting several rebounds despite close attention from the home players, with the visitors only down by 1 at half time.

Saints stormed out of the locker room in the third period, coach Garnet Gayle leading the way with 12 points, including two 3s and good support from Ellmer and Hackett, leaving the visitors in the driving seat 58 - 52 ahead going into the final quarter. Eastside had the better of some strange refereeing decisions, including one where a Saints player came out with a bruise under his eye, from an opposition elbow, only to be called for a defensive foul!, and this together with shots not dropping, good free throwing from the home side, a loud and very noisy home crowd, made the last few minutes very tight and tense - unfortunately for Saints they could not quite match the Division 3 South league winners, and came away very
disappointed, loosing 76 - 71.

Saints Beat Sabres

City of Sheffield Saints emerged battered and bruised fro a close encounter with their cross town rivals Sheffield Sabres. The game was very low scoring in the first period, with neither team playing well, with the home side coming out leading 13 – 8. Saints coach Gayle injected some pace and scoring in the second 10 minutes, netting two 3 pointers, a lay up and one from two free throws, helping Saints to reduce the deficit to 4 points at the half. The third quarter was Saints – Sabres committed offensive, technical and unsportsmanlike fouls, and with the visitors outscoring their hosts by 12, the score going into the last 10 minutes was 49 -41. The last 10 minutes was a tight, tense period, with Saints netting three 3 pointers and 5 lay ups, and Sabres failing to make their superior rebounding pay, missing several apparently easy shots and 4 free throws, Saints came away with a 69 – 59 win. Saints have one game left to play at Derby on 14th, Sabres have another home game tomorrow v Sefton and are away on 13th v Stockport – if Sabres lose either of these games and Saints win on 14th, then Saints would finish in second place, if not they will be away to the second placed team in the South on 20th/22nd.

City of Sheffield Saints played their last home league game of the season against City of Nottingham Tribe and came out with an easy win 83 – 28. The second quarter brought Luke Parker in with 9, Ash Chandley with 7 in a 20 – 4 Saints run, gave the home team a 42 – 18 lead at the half. Coach Garnet Gayle appeared to use the second half more as a training session, changing all 5 players in both the 10 minute periods, so allowing all the squad to have plenty of court time. Saints have cemented their play off place, and now wait to see who their opposition will be.

Saints Beat Stockport

City of Sheffield Saints crossed the Pennines to play Stockport Falcons on a cold, foggy evening, with a clear intention to win. The game was scoreless for 4 minutes with both players missing easy shots – perhaps the cold in the hall was to blame. Saints eventually found their shooting hands, with a 10 – 3 run, ending the quarter up by 8. Stockport came back briefly in the second period with, but two 3 pointers in a 12 – 3 run gave Saints a 39 – 21 lead at the half. Saints Beat Manchester

City of Sheffield Saints' game against Manchester Magic at All Saints on Saturday was definitely one of two halves. Saints went on a 10 – 0 run in the first quarter only for the visitors to come back with 13 points of their own, and close only 2 down. The second period was similar, Manchester had a 13 – 2 run, Saints followed with 12 – 6, ending just 2 down at the break. The second half was a totally different story - Saints shot out to a 24 point lead, with Chris Hackett scoring 19 in the third quarter, and Manchester only making 7. The final 10 minutes was a similar story, with the visitors restricted to a further 7 points and Saints netting 18, to give them an 84 – 49 win. Saints Beat Trojans

City of Sheffield Saints continued their winning ways with an 88 – 63 victory over Tyne Met Trojans at All Saints on Saturday. John ‘Sick note' Imison who has only played 7 minutes in previous games, due to injuries sustained in games and training, and work commitments, certainly made up for lost time, top scoring with 16 points, and generally adding strength to Saints in attack and defence. The game was end to end for most of the 40 minutes, with Saints up by 7 at the end of the first quarter. The second period saw the home team stretch their lead to 10 and the fifth 3 pointer of the half – 2 each from Ellmer and Olusoga and 1 each from Chandley and Hackett. Saints Slay Dragons

Saints topple league leaders.

City of Sheffield Saints brought Bradford Dragons' hopes of an unbeaten season to a crashing halt on Saturday with an 88-85 win on Dragons' home court. The game was close throughout but, after a shaky start, the Saints rallied behind Ellmer, Hackett and coach Garnet Gayle. More good work from young guns Jim Rose and John Stewart saw the Saints go into half time with a 48-40 lead. The Dragons came out firing for the second half and the Saints lost their advantage, trailing 67-60 going into the final period. But great ball movement and solid team defence got the Saints right back in the game and with the scores tied at 85-85, Luke Parker stripped the ball and found Pete Olusoga on the break for the go-ahead score. The Dragons called time-out to set up their final play but could only turn the ball over, leaving the Saints to hold on for an important victory.

Saints Beat Maroons

City of Sheffield Saints began the new year with a keenly contested game against fellow Yorkshire team Bradford Maroons, who are always hot to handle, unlike the snow and ice outside. This Division 3 clash was one of few surviving games anywhere in the country, so attracted players from other teams whose games had fallen victim to the weather. Saints appeared to be suffering a hangover from the festivities as they gave the ball away 10 times in the first quarter, but somehow managed to end the first 10 minutes tied on 17 all. The second period would have been Bradford's but for Saints 8 three pointers, 3 from Ash Chandley, 2 form Ellmer and 1 from young Jim Rose, who looked very confident in his 19 minutes of court time, and the home team were up by 4 at the half. Saints pulled away to a 10 point lead in the third, but the visitors closed to within 6, with a 3 pointer on the buzzer. The final 10 minutes was a very close encounter, but Saints managed to hold their nerve and came out with a 83 – 79 point win.

Saints lose vs Leeds II

City of Sheffield Saints gave Yorkshire rivals Leeds Carnegie an early Christmas present in yesterdays Division 3 clash, missing 6 free throws and having numerous turnovers. The referees appeared reluctant to blow their whistles at times increasing coach Gayle's frustration. Saints were without their 2 Junior Sharks players (coming away with a win against Birmingham) and definitely missed John Stewart's height against a young, physically aggressive team, coached by ex Sheffield Shark Voysie Winters. Saints have only won 7 games and lost 5, so will have to cut down turnovers, and improve their free throwing, if they hope to reach the play-offs this season.

Final score Saints 73 – Leeds 75.

Saints Lose To Derby

City of Sheffield Saints suffered a hangover from last weekends win over local rivals Sabres, and crashed down to earth with a disappointing display against Derby Trailblazers II, losing 78 – 80. The game was a close affair throughout, with 16 three pointers, the referees seemingly reluctant to call fouls, Saints finding it difficult to penetrate Derby's zone defence, and missing player/coach Garnet Gayle's influence. The bright spots were John Stewart again top scoring with 22, new comer Luke Parker with 21, and assistant coach Pete Olusoga's return to scoring with 19.

Saints Beat Sabres

City of Sheffield Basketball Club had a win win day on Saturday, Hatters Women beat close rivals UWIC, Hallam-Hatters beat local rivals Mansfield, Junior Sharks U18's beat Manchester, U15's beat Rotherham and last but not least, Saints Men beat Sheffield Sabres Men 85 – 71 in a Division 3 North match. The game must have been exciting for the neutrals in the large crowd, but nail biting for the supporters of both teams - Saints went out to a 12 point lead at the end of the first quarter, thanks to accurate inside shooting, and despite Sabres 4 threes. The second 10 minutes was a different story as Sabres brought on their other big man Peter Scantlebury, who made 4 baskets and took 8 rebounds, giving Sabres a 15 all quarter. After the break, Scants continued his excellent rebounding, and as Saints appeared to loose momentum, the visitors outscored Saints by 20 points to 12, leaving the home team with a narrow 4 point lead going into the final 10 minutes. Saints regained the initiative with a 10 – 0 run at the start of the quarter, and as Scants and Richard tired, the home team continued to stretch their lead and came home comfortable winners. Coach Garnet Gayle lead by example on court, playing all 40 minutes, as did Chris Hackett.

Saints players and management would like to wish Sabres Andre Rankine a complete recovery from his recent knee injury.

Saints Beat Tribe

City of Sheffield Saints Men came back from a scrappy game v Nottingham Tribe with a 59 – 55 win, far too close for comfort, mainly due to Saints 21 turnovers, 30 missed 2 point shots and only scoring 4 from 19 threes. Luckily Saints made 17 of 25 free throws, and Chris Laws held his nerve with 7 from 8 in the final quarter which helped to save the day. John Stewart was top scorer again with 19, but only 2 other players got into double figures. Saints will not need any motivating for their home game v local rivals Sheffield Sabres, but will have to be at their best for what will undoubtedly be a very tough game against the team which includes four ex BBL Sharks. The game is at All Saints on Saturday 5th December 6.30pm tip.

The three Junior Sharks players had raced up the M1 after their win against Leicester, to play their in this Men's Division 3 fixture.

The first quarter started well for Saints with 6 Saints players getting on the score sheet, leading 21 – 16, luckily the opposition had missed 5 free throws. The visitors had a 13-0 blitz in the second period, but Saints came back with a 18-6 run, with all but 2 points being scored by the junior players, and going into half time 43 – 35.

Loughborough won the third by 6 points, despite Ellmer's two 3 pointers (he made 6 in total) and the final 10 minutes was nail biting with the lead changing hands on several occasions, the visitors leading by 3 with 6.3 seconds remaining, Chris Hackett was fouled when scoring, missed the free throw, Kingsley got the rebound and scored, the visitors called a time-out, so put the ball in on the half way line, but thanks to Saints defensive play, were unable to score, leaving the home team the victors by 83 points to 82. 16 year old John Stewart had scored 29 points in Leicester for the Junior Sharks Under 18s, and made 27 in his 27 minutes court time for the Saints Men plus the 5 rebounds and 1 blocked shot which completed a tremendous afternoon's work.

Short Handed Saints Lose Away At Sefton

A short handed, short in height, City of Sheffield Saints had an away day to forget in Liverpool, against Sefton Stars, a well drilled, athletic team whose height advantage gave them an edge in rebounding. Saints flattered to deceive in the first 5 minutes scoring 10 points – the game went downhill from then on for the visitors, as Sefton ended the first quarter up by 16 to 12, a lead they never relinquished.

Saints did rally briefly with three 3 pointers in the second period, and were only down by 6 at the interval. Sefton quickly squashed any hope for Saints as they scored three quick baskets, and were never less than 10 points up from then onwards. 12 missed free throws and Rich Fook's back problem did not help the visitors cause, and this was no way to celebrate coach 45th birthday on Wednesday – hopefully the team will be back to their best for the home game against Loughborough University on Saturday 21st at All Saints, 6.30pm tip.

Saints Beat Manchester

Halloween started early for Sheffield Saints – a player was stopped by the police on his way to meet his team mates, then the Snake Pass was closed, so the convoy had to detour to Woodhead and the delays continued with traffic queues on the Manchester motorways; thanks to mobile phones, the 5 team members who were at the Amaechi Centre were able to keep the home officials in formed of the reasons for the late arrival of the other 7 team members, including coach Garnet Gayle. The tip off was delayed by 15 minutes, but the game had to start with the 3 Under 18 Junior Sharks - Ben Cepulis, Jim Rose and John Stewart, and the 2 Chris's - Hackett and Law. Kit was handed out to the latecomers on their arrival in the car park, but they did not enter the fray until the last minute of the first quarter, as the less experienced players managed to hold their own against a very physical young team. The quarter ended with Manchester leading by 2 which they extended to 7 at the half as Saints struggled against the height of the Mancunians – their tallest player was 6' 9”. Saints were still behind at the end of the third quarter, but two 3 pointers and converted free throws brought the visitors back into the game and a 1 point lead in the final minute - only for Manchester to score a buzzer beating 3 in the last second, taking the game into overtime. Finally Saints afternoon of horrors was over as they outscored the home team by 23 points to 10, giving them a 92 – 79 win.

Saints were without their Under 18 Junior Sharks, but included Ash Chandley and welcomed back Javan Hayles from his Turkish holiday, and they both played their part in giving Saints a massive 108 – 53 points win.
