Saints Lose To Leeds Met

Sheffield Saints: 63
Leeds Met Carnegie: 74

Saints faced Leeds Carnegie of the Second division in a National Cup clash, at Leeds Met, on Sunday evening. As expected, it was a tough encounter – Leeds have an almost semi-professional squad, training 4 hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week, compared to Saints, who manage 3 – 4 hours a week for most of the squad, job, family and financial commitments permitting. Saints lost the first quarter 18 – 26, and the outcome looked bleak, but excellent team work, hard defence and a fighting spirit closed the gap. Unfortunately Saints never managed to get closer than 7 points, but coach Garnet Gayle was delighted with his team's performance, and congratulated them all on their display. The availability of the Junior Sharks players for this encounter certainly had a big impact on the game, a special mention for Devon Van Oostrum (still eligible to play Under 16) and Dan James (Under 18). Final score 63 - 74
