Saints Out of National Cup

The City of Sheffield Saints bowed out of the National Cup last Sunday after losing a close fought battle against Mansfield Luna Stars. After beating Liverpool the night before, it was the Saints team that had the brighter start, with Pawel Szafraniec leading the way to a 9-4 lead. However, 9 points in the quarter from Luna Stars' guard Matt Shaw kept the game close with the Saints edging it 20-19 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams struggled offensively in the second period but Stockwell managed to get 9 of his 23 points in the quarter. Eleven points from Garnet Gayle, including two 3 pointers kept the Saints close, trailing 38-33 at the half.

Gayle continued to work hard for his team in the third, while Rick Marsh and his gret big massive hands proved to be handful for the Luna Stars. Five points from Marsh and 8 more from Szafraniec took the Saints into the fourth quarter trailing by 3 at 55-52.

After a cagey start to the fourth, the Saints went ahead 60-58 but When Andy Turner and Rick Marsh both fouled out with 7 minutes remaining in the game, the game swung in Mansfield's favour. The Saints were still ahead with just over a minute left in the game thanks to 7 more from Gayle but Stockwell hit 3 of 4 from the free throw line to give Mansfield the 71-69 win.
